Being Happy and Well.

Good psychological wellbeing does not happen by chance. Wellbeing is not really a state of being it is a state of doing. You have to do the right things to be well.

One of the challenges we face is knowing what we should we do? There is a myriad of tips and methods available to us. On the internet, in magazines and on workplace noticeboards. What really helps and what is just fluff?

Finding Happiness and Good Wellbeing

An excellent place to look for real pearls of wisdom is to the founding fathers of modern psychology. One such person is Dr Albert Ellis the founder of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (a forerunner of CBT). Dr Ellis studied psychological wellbeing and developed his understanding of it for over 50 years. His therapies are amongst the most effective ever produced, so he’s a very reliable source.

Dr Ellis found that there were several prerequisites for good psychological wellbeing. When people adopted these philosophies and behaviours, they tended to enjoy good long-term wellbeing and happiness.

9 of the most important prerequisites are:

  • Acknowledge that all your emotions and reactions come from within. Become responsible for them.
  • Be flexible and non-extreme in your beliefs about yourself and others.
  • Value rational, logical thinking and don’t expect perfection.
  • Be interested in yourself and your growth while being mindful of others and the environment. Realise that sometimes the latter two come first and sometimes they don’t.
  • Provide your own direction; don’t let others decide for you.
  • Understand that your happiness is your responsibility, and this comes from committing to meaningful pursuits. 
  • Discover the joy and benefit in taking calculated risks. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and learn to embrace uncertainty.
  • Understand the difference between short-term and long-term happiness and when to engage with each one.
  • You shouldn’t leave it to luck, chance and magic that your wellbeing will be okay. Start doing the right things to nurture and support it.
